The online-only dispersal of stock from owner/breeder Sam F. “Sonny” Henderson features a diverse slate of offerings for those interested in racing or breeding around the country.

Henderson is a Texas rancher and oilman who has been involved in horse racing since the early 1960s, garnering success in both the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred realms. In 2016, he campaigned Suddenbreakingnews to a win in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes and a fifth place effort in the Kentucky Derby. Suddenbreakingnews retired with career earnings of $767,089.

Cleopatra’s Charge

Best known for her heroic turn of foot in this year’s Sunland Park Oaks, where she came from near-last at the quarter pole to win by three-quarters of a length. Trained by Gary Cross, the 3-year-old filly most recently finished third in the Toni Samora Memorial Stakes at Sunray Park on May 21.

Since her latest start, Cleopatra’s Charge has been training at the Downs at Albuquerque, where she posted a four-furlong workout in :48.80 on July 3.

Cleopatra’s Charge hails from the family of 2000 Canadian Horse of the Year Quiet Resolve, Canadian champion Eye of the Sphynx, and Canadian filly classic winner Quiet Cleo.

Shannan Henderson Petropoulos: “She won the Sunland Park Oaks. She’s run a couple times since, but it was at a bullring at Sunray Park, where it’s 6 1/2 furlongs, and she doesn’t like the bullrings. She’s sound, and I expect her to run out more money. I think she’ll be best going a mile and above.”

Zanadu’s second dam is the Grade 1 winner Twist Afleet, who is the pivot point for graded-placed runners A New Twist and Awesome Twist.

Shannan Henderson Petropoulos: “We bought her as a maiden mare, and we didn’t get her in foal the first two years. We got her in foal to Munnings, and the foal (filly Olympic Artist) sold at the Keeneland January sale as a short yearling for $100,000. They pinhooked her last July, and she sold for $200,000. We’ve got a full-sister on her side.”

Mo Afleet is out of the stakes-placed Afleet Lover, and his second dam is a stakes winner.

Shannan Henderson Petropoulos: “Tortoiseshell had a Mineshaft with Bobby Dodd in Florida who got hurt, but he thought that might have been the fastest thing he had down there. I’ve got high hopes for him on account of that. It looks like the mare’s a producer.”

His extended family includes Grade 1 winner Aldiza, Grade 2 winner Atelier, and Grade 3 winner Aurelia’s Belle.

Dorrance has a pair of yearlings cataloged in the dispersal, along with seven in-foal mares and three foals at side.

Shannan Henderson Petropoulos: “We bought him as a yearling, gave $230,000 for him, and he sure looked to be a runner, but he got hurt. I saw him run at Remington, and I was wowed. He’s good looking, and he’s got some really good looking foals. He’s a big, Quarter Horse type, very muscular.”
